Botox muscle relaxing injections
The majority of wrinkles and lines are caused by making the same facial expression thousands of times eventually forming a crease in the skin. Common areas for expression lines are found between the brows, across the forehead and at the corners of the eyes.
Botulinum protein (muscle relaxing injections) is a medicine that is injected directly into the muscles with the effect of reducing muscle action in the local area. It has been used for over twenty years on thousands of patients to treat many neurological and eye disorders as well as for facial wrinkle reduction. Common brand names include Botox ®, Vistabel®, Dysport and Azzalure®.
Botox ® works by blocking nerve transmission between the nerve endings and the muscle fibres around the injection site to relax the muscles so that they do not contract. The untreated facial muscles contract in the normal way, allowing normal facial expression to remain unaffected. The aim is to break the habit of frowning so that the muscles responsible for creating facial expressions are used less, the effect of which, is to reduce facial creases. Over a year or two the excessive frowning habit can be broken.
Treatment does not take very long – usually about 20 minutes. The first effects start at around two days and the complete effect is visible in two weeks. At Health and Aesthetics patients having facial anti-wrinkle treatments are given a follow-up appointment fourteen days after their initial treatment. There is no additional charge for this follow-up appointment. The effects of the treatment can last for up to three months. Clinical studies indicate that treatments last longer over time so that you should require fewer injections in the future. However, this varies from patient to patient.
