Acne & Acne Scars Treatment Info

There are a number of factors that can lead to acne such as a hormonal imbalance, stress, make-up and possibly diet. Teenagers are particularly prone to developing acne during puberty. The condition can range from mild to severe.

There are four steps involved in the development of Acne:

  1. Increased production of sebum (an oily substance secreted by glands in the skin)
  2. Blockage of pores by dead skin cells.
  3. Invasion of the blocked pores by bacteria
  4. Inflammation of the skin

The skin has lots of small sebaceous glands just below the surface. These glands make sebum – a natural oil that keeps the skin smooth. Tiny pores in the skin allow the sebum to come to the surface. If you are prone to acne, hormones may trigger the sebaceous glands to produce excess sebum.

At the same time the dead skin cells lining the openings of the hair follicles aren’t shed properly and clog up the follicles. This build-up of oil in the hair follicles creates an ideal environment for bacteria to grow, which feed off the sebum and produce substances that inflame the skin. This creates spots and the redness associated with acne.

In more severe, inflammatory acne, cysts can develop beneath the skin’s surface. If these cysts rupture the infection can spread which can result in scarring. To avoid this, acne needs be treated early and effectively.

There are a number of acne treatment options. Dr Tailor and her team will be able to advise you on the best one(s) for you. These include:

Skin peels
Chemical peels carefully exfoliate the surface layers of the skin. This simulates the skin to produce fresh new skin cells so the pores do not get clogged.
Acid peels also help to cleanse the pores and kill acne bacteria.

Laser treatment
Laser treatment kills the acne bacteria by exciting compounds called porphyrins which live inside the cells. Laser treatment also helps to reduce sebum (oil production) in the skin.
Since there are less acne bacteria and less sebum, the acne improves.

Dermalux LED light therapy
The blue light used helps to destroy acne bacteria and normalize oil production. This reduces active acne and also helps to prevent future break-outs.

ZO Medical skin care
We offer effective medical skin care treatments, including Dr Zein Obagi’s powerful new range. ZO products use the latest advances in skin restoration and skin rejuvenation to create brighter, healthier skin.

Scarring occurs as a result of poor acne treatment.

There are three main types of scarring:

  • Atrophic scars – meaning loss of tissue. These are often seen as shallow depressions or small holes in the skin (ice-pick scars).
  • Hypertrophic scars – where excessive tissue is formed.
  • Pigmented scars – more common in dark skinned people.

Acne scarring can be treated in a number of ways. Dr Tailor and her team will be able to advise you of the best one(s) for you. These include:

Laser treatment works best on pitted scars and will help the scar to become smaller, tighter and flatter. The treatment will stimulate the production of collagen, tighten existing collagen in the tissues and re-surface the skin.
You will need a course of 3-5 treatments at 6 weekly intervals.

Radiofrequency treatment also works best on pitted scars as well as stretch marks. It will help the scar to become smaller, tighter and flatter. The treatment will stimulate the production of collagen and will tighten existing collagen in the tissues.
You will need a course of 3-5 treatments at 6 weekly intervals.

Microneedling treatment works best on pitted scars. It will help the scar to become smaller, tighter and flatter by stimulating the production of collagen.
You will need a course of 5 treatments at 6 weekly intervals.

PRP ‘Dracula’ therapy works best on general scars and will aid healing. It will help the scar to become smaller and tighter, as well as stimulate the production of collagen.
You will need a course of 3-5 treatments at 6 weekly intervals.

The ZO medical range is very effective at treating pigmented acne scars. These products contain prescription medication and are only available from a qualified doctor, such as Dr Tailor.

Dermal fillers will help to lift the scar and are an excellent treatment for pitted scars.
You will only require one treatment, but it will need to be repeated at least annually.

Most of the treatments work by stimulating the formation of new collagen in the skin. This natural process takes time, so results will usually only start to appear around 3 months after the first treatment.

You will then continue to see improvement for up to 6-8 months.

The exception is dermal filler treatment, where you will see an immediate improvement. The results will continue to improve for 2-4 weeks after treatment.

Results can be enhanced by using cosmeceutical anti-ageing skincare as well as high level, broad spectrum sun protection to reduce photo-damage.

Most of these treatments work by causing a controlled injury. This stimulates a healing response and ultimately the production of new collagen and elastin.

People differ in the way that they respond to the healing process. Some people will produce less collagen and elastin than others. Therefore it is difficult to predict the exact results of each treatment. However, the vast majority of our patients report excellent results from these treatments.
