“Skin booster” has become one of those catch all terms that gets used for almost any injectable that isn’t a traditional dermal filler. Patients come into clinic asking for “a skin booster” the way they might ask for “a facial”, without necessarily knowing that there are now eight genuinely different treatments hiding under that one label, each working through its own biological mechanism, each suited to a different skin concern.
Choosing the wrong one isn’t dangerous, but it can mean paying for a treatment that was never going to solve the problem you actually have. Someone with genuinely crepey, sun damaged skin on the neck needs something quite different from someone who just wants a bit more glow before a wedding. So here’s what each of these eight treatments actually is, how it works, and who I think it suits, based on what I see week to week in clinic.
Juvelook & Lenisna
Juvelook and Lenisna are two strengths of the same underlying idea, a hybrid of hyaluronic acid with PDLLA, or poly D,L lactic acid, microspheres. The HA element gives an immediate hydration and glow on the day, while the PDLLA slowly biodegrades over the following weeks, acting as a steady collagen stimulus. Juvelook is the gentler of the pair, and I tend to use it for earlier laxity, fine lines or delicate areas such as under the eyes. Lenisna is denser and better suited to more established laxity or areas that need real structural support, such as the jawline. Patients tend to like that there’s something visible from day one rather than a long wait, with the collagen driven firming building on top of that over a course of two to three sessions, four weeks apart, and lasting anywhere from twelve to eighteen months or more depending on which product is used.
JULÄINE
JULÄINE is a poly L lactic acid biostimulator using LaSynPro technology, and it sits at the more structural end of the spectrum. The PLLA microspheres prompt the body to lay down genuine Type I collagen over several weeks, giving a diffuse tightening effect across the face without adding perceptible volume. It suits widespread facial laxity where a patient specifically doesn’t want to look “filled”, and results from a course of three sessions can last eighteen months or more. I think it’s still underused in the UK relative to how effective it is.
Hyperdilute Radiesse
Hyperdilute Radiesse takes a filler most people know for adding volume and uses it in almost the opposite way. By diluting the calcium hydroxyapatite well beyond its usual strength, sometimes as far as one part filler to six parts saline depending on how thin the skin is, the aim shifts entirely away from volume and towards biostimulation. The microspheres act as a scaffold under the skin, encouraging fibroblasts to lay down fresh Type I collagen over the following months rather than sitting there as a filling agent. I find it particularly useful for genuinely lax, crepey skin on the neck, jawline or body areas such as the upper arms and abdomen, where a patient wants a firmer feel rather than anything obviously “done”. It typically needs two to three sessions four to six weeks apart, with results building over several months and lasting around a year. Unlike the HA based treatments on this list, it cannot be reliably dissolved with hyaluronidase, so it’s one I only use once a patient fully understands what they’re committing to.
HarmonyCa
HarmonyCa is a genuine hybrid: crosslinked hyaluronic acid combined with calcium hydroxyapatite microspheres and lidocaine. The HA gives an immediate lift and volume on the day, while the CaHA works quietly in the background over the following two to three months, stimulating the skin’s own collagen and elastin. I use this for mild to moderate laxity in the mid and lower face where a patient wants to see something straight away but also wants the longer term biostimulatory benefit, and results can last twelve to eighteen months or longer.
Polynucleotides
Polynucleotides are purified DNA fragments, most commonly derived from salmon, which sounds unusual the first time patients hear it but has a strong evidence base behind it. Once injected, they activate fibroblasts, calm inflammation and encourage the skin to produce its own collagen and elastin. I find these particularly useful for skin that is reactive, sun damaged or inflamed, including acne scarring and rosacea prone skin, where a more mechanical filler based approach would only aggravate things. Results build gradually over a course of three to four sessions, and tend to last six to twelve months.
SuneKOS
SuneKOS combines low molecular weight hyaluronic acid with six amino acids, the actual building blocks of collagen and elastin, which triggers dermal biogenesis rather than just hydrating the skin from the outside in. This is one I reach for when elasticity, rather than simple dryness, is the main complaint, particularly on crepey under eye skin, the neck and the backs of the hands. Patients usually notice an early improvement after two or three sessions of a typical three to four session course, with results lasting six to nine months.
SkinVive by Juvéderm
SkinVive uses Vycross technology to deliver lightly crosslinked hyaluronic acid as tiny intradermal microdroplets. It’s the most straightforwardly cosmetic of the group, aimed purely at surface skin quality: glow, hydration and smoothness, without touching facial structure. It suits a wide age range and is quick to show results, often visible within days of a single session. Because it’s HA based, it can also be dissolved with Hyalase if ever needed, which I always think is worth mentioning to slightly anxious first time patients.
Profhilo
Profhilo remains one of the most established names in this category. It’s a high concentration, non crosslinked hyaluronic acid using NAHYCO technology, which spreads freely through the tissue rather than staying put, deeply hydrating the skin while stimulating collagen, elastin and the skin’s own HA production. It suits broader laxity and thinning across the face and neck rather than a single problem area. A course of two sessions four weeks apart shows its most noticeable results four to eight weeks after the second treatment, lasting six to nine months.
So which one is right for you?
None of these eight treatments adds significant volume, and none will address moderate to advanced structural change on its own, that’s still the territory of dermal filler or, occasionally, surgery. But within the world of skin quality, the differences are real and worth understanding before you book anything.
An immediate refresh with progressive collagen building behind it is Juvelook for a gentler effect, or Lenisna where more structural support is needed. Diffuse structural tightening without volume points towards JULÄINE. Genuinely lax, crepey skin wanting firmness without volume suits Hyperdilute Radiesse. Wanting an immediate lift alongside longer term biostimulation suits HarmonyCa. Reactive, inflamed or sun damaged skin points towards polynucleotides. Elasticity concerns suit SuneKOS. A quick, reliable glow suits SkinVive. And the tried and tested all rounder for hydration and bioremodelling is Profhilo.
The honest answer is that the best treatment is the one matched properly to your skin, not the one trending on social media that month. I always recommend a proper consultation before committing to any course, so we can look at your skin together and work out which of these genuinely suits you, rather than guessing from a list.
