What is Profhilo

Profhilo is a unique injectable that is becoming popular with patients looking for a natural approach to anti-ageing. Profhilo is often confused with fillers due to its Hyaluronic Acid base, but it is actually vastly different and should not be mistaken for a filler.

In this skincare series, we explore what Profhilo is, why it is different to fillers and how it can be used to combat ageing effectively.

What is Profhilo?

Profhilo is a unique injectable with one of the purest forms of Hyaluronic Acid on the market. It is used to bio-remodel the skin.

What does Profhilo do?

Profhilo, when injected into the skin, lasts for 28 days. In this short time, it stimulates 4 different types of collagen and elastin which results in tissue improvement. Profhilo has a unique spreading ability and it is this unique property which makes it extremely effective for areas such as the neck, décolletage and lower face which suffer from crepey appearance as we age. It can also be used on the arms or anywhere on the body which is suffering from crepey skin.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic Acid is one of THE buzzwords in the beauty and aesthetics industry right now. Hyaluronic Acid is a molecule which holds water and is key to keeping the skin plump and hydrated. It can hold over 1,000 times its weight in water and is key to the production of collagen.

Why is Hyaluronic Acid important?

Hyaluronic Acid improves the skin’s hydration and production of collagen as well as fighting free radicals and keeping the skin elastic. As we age, we produce less Hyaluronic Acid and this helps to produce crepey wrinkly looking skin.

Can I use Hyaluronic Acid as a serum?

The short answer is no. Hyaluronic Acid cannot be absorbed by the skin. Radara is the first product which has used a microchannelling technology to introduce holes into the skin which are invisible to the eye in an at home system to get Hyaluronic Acid into the skin. However, this is purely for the eye area. The rest of the body is still not able to be treated.

Profhilo vs Fillers

Profhilo and Fillers are often mistaken as one and the same due to their Hyaluronic base. However, what makes it different is that Profhilo is thermally cross linked. This means that the Hyaluronic acid molecules are heated to bond them together. Fillers however, such as Juvederm are linked chemically. This makes them work in very different ways and serve different purposes.

Does Profhilo work?

The results of Profhilo are fantastic if injected on a strict schedule. It must be injected on the schedule of one month apart for your first two treatments (some patients will need a third treatment one month later) and then maintenance treatments every 6 months. Dr Rekha Tailor and Dr Sonia Kersey are both able to inject Profhilo and love using this product as it provides patients with not only a natural alternative to fillers, but an excellent result for those who want to tackle crepey skin on the face and neck to product tighter and more hydrated skin.
