Cellulite – the orange peel ripple that we find on our bums and thighs is a harmless and natural condition that affects an estimated 90% of women. From celebrities, such as Ashley Graham to Demi Lovato proudly displaying their cellulite on social, there’s no doubt that we have never been hotter on embracing this totally natural and very common phenomenon. But what is it, and can we get rid of it?
What is cellulite?
Cellulite is a very common, harmless skin condition that causes lumpy, dimpled flesh on the thighs, hips, buttocks and abdomen. The condition is most prevalent in women. “Whether you’re a marathon runner or exercise-averse, cellulite can appear on women of all fitness levels and body shapes” explains Dr Rekha Tailor.
“Although it is most common around the thighs and buttocks, it can also be found on the breasts, lower abdomen and upper arms.”
What causes cellulite?
Cellulite is caused by tiny connective tissue filaments (called fibrous septae) that anchor the skin to the underlying tissue and have fat in between. These filaments can pull down on the skin’s underside and create dimples (cellulite). In men, this connective tissue is criss-crossed rather than vertical, hence why men suffer a lot less than women from cellulite.
Whilst connective tissue can be weakened by hormones, lack of exercise and muscle tone and poor circulation, it is not due to obesity or toxins, it’s just normal fat in the body.
Can I get rid of cellulite through exercise?
One of the biggest misconceptions about cellulite is that hard-core cardio workouts are the answer to smooth skin. But the truth is, you need a combination of workout styles, particularly muscle-building movements to improve the tone of the skin.
“Not only does exercise help keep body fat levels lower, it also improves circulation and muscle tone in cellulite-prone areas. Improved circulation will keep both the skin and connective tissue healthier, as well as helping with the elimination of waste and excess fluid retention which again exacerbates the appearance of cellulite,” reveals Dr Tailor.
So, can you get rid of cellulite?
The answer to this question unfortunately is, no. “Cellulite can never be removed completely and its presence, severity, and location of are in large part determined by hormones and genetics,” reveals Dr Tailor.
“However, a combination of proper diet and exercise will decrease the layer of fat underneath the skin, making cellulite less noticeable. A healthy diet can also improve the skin and connective tissue; making them stronger, healthier and more supple. Staying hydrated and eating well will prevent water retention which exacerbates the appearance of cellulite,” she clarifies.
