Femilift—side effects, who it’s unsuitable for and aftercare advice

As Femilift is a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure, there are very few side effects.

There’s also very little downtime. You’ll have to wait three days before you have sex or use tampons, but other than that you can resume your usual activities straight away.

Below we take a look at some of the side effects and who the procedure isn’t suitable for, and share some advice on aftercare.

Side effects

Fever

Some women report developing a fever after having the procedure but this is very rare. This could happen because the procedure causes an inflammatory response in the body, as it uses heat to stimulate collagen growth. If you’re particularly sensitive to heat, the heat used during the procedure could give you fever-like symptoms.

If you feel feverish after having a Femilift procedure, speak to your practitioner.

Pain and cramping

Most women don’t experience any pain or cramping after having Femilift. However, some soreness or irritation for a few days after the treatment is completely normal and is usually very mild. Some women describe it as being similar to the irritation or soreness that occurs with a yeast infection.

If you experience cramping after the procedure, it’s likely to feel like mild period pain and should only last a day or two.

Bleeding

You may experience some blood-stained watery discharge after having the treatment. This is completely normal and should clear up within two to three days. Bleeding can occur because Femilift uses heat to cause minor injuries to the vagina wall—this stimulates the growth of collagen and blood vessels to create a healthier vaginal canal.

If you experience any heavy bleeding—especially if it’s painful—speak to your practitioner.

Watery discharge

Watery discharge is one of the most common side effects of Femilift. This should only last for around three days.

If you experience heavy discharge—particularly if it contains a lot of blood, or lasts for longer than three or four days—speak to your practitioner.

Femilift complications

Before you have the procedure, Dr Rekha Tailor will take your full medical history to establish whether Femilift is an appropriate treatment for you.

You shouldn’t have Femilift if you:

  • have an active infection, such as herpes, HPV or thrush
  • are on your period—the treatment won’t be as effective if you’re menstruating as it may be difficult for the laser to penetrate the vaginal walls through the blood
  • take blood-thinning medication
  • have a connective tissue disorder
  • have lupus or are photosensitive
  • have keloid scarring
  • are pregnant, breastfeeding or have given birth in the past three months

Femilift aftercare

  • You can shower immediately after the treatment, but it’s best to wait for three days before having a bath or going swimming.
  • Don’t use tampons for three days after the procedure.
  • You’ll need to wait three days after the procedure before you have sex.
  • Femilift shouldn’t make sex painful—in fact, less painful sex is one of the positive side effects of the procedure. If you do experience pain during sex after having Femilift, speak to your practitioner.
