Acne is a common and challenging skin condition. We use the latest ClearSkin Er:Glass (erbium glass fibre) laser to treat the skin.
ClearSkin is the first laser that combines a non-ablative laser with contact cooling and vacuum technology to treat acne vulgaris safely and effectively. The non-ablative laser penetrates the skin, destroys the P. Acnes bacteria, causes thermal damage to the sebaceous glands and reduces sebum production but leaves the skin intact. The vacuum extracts accumulated sebaceous material from the pores. The contact cooling protects the skin, reduces pain and hence the treatment is safer and more effective. It is a non-ablative laser which means it uses a wavelength that heats up the water in the tissues but does not cause it to evaporate (ablate).
What does the ClearSkin Laser treat?
The laser treats all forms of acne vulgaris including papules, pustules and nodules. It also treats blackheads, oily skin and open pores.
The ClearSkin laser also rejuvenates the skin by stimulating collagen production and hence improves:
- Acne scarring
- Lines and wrinkles
- Crepey skin
- Sun damage
- Sun spots
What happens during the treatment?
Before any treatment a patch test is done 24 hours before a treatment.
During the treatment, the hand-piece is passed across the treatment area several times in different directions so that the whole area is covered evenly.
The laser has a cooling system to minimise any discomfort.
Can anyone have the treatment?
The treatment is suitable for all skin types.
How many treatments will I need?
For acne, acne scarring and other skin conditions, we recommend a course of 6 – 12 treatments. These treatments should be 2-3 weeks apart and you should return for a maintenance treatment 6 monthly.
What are the possible complications?
There may be mild redness, swelling and skin irritation in the treated area. However, this can be significantly reduced and healing enhanced by having Dermalux LED Light Therapy immediately after the laser treatment.
What is the aftercare?
We recommend the following:
- No exercise for 24 hours.
- Avoid UV exposure after treatment.
- No hot baths for 24 hours.
- SFP and antioxidant protection to be worn after treatment.
- No heat treatments to your face for up to 7 days.
What are the contraindications?
- Tanned skin
- Hypopigmentation (vitiligo)
- Inflammatory skin condition (such as eczema or active herpes simplex) at the treatment site
- Skin cancer or other cancer (including being on cancer drug therapy)
- History of keloid scars
- Pregnancy or breast-feeding
How can I improve my results?
You can enhance the results by using cosmeceutical skincare as well as high level, broad spectrum sun protection to reduce photo-damage.
