What is a fungal nail infection and how is it treated?
The main cause of a fungal nail infection is caused by a fungus called dermatophyte and fungal nail infections in the toes are often caused by athletes foot which spreads to the toenail. IN short, a fungal nail infection is caused by overgrown fungus in, under or around the nail. These fungi thrive in moist and warm environments making the toenail a prime area for an infection to occur.
It can also occur by unclean tools in nail salons whereby hygiene is not taken seriously.
Although there are many prescription and over the counter treatments for a fungal nail infection, these are lengthy and unreliable. At Health & Aesthetics, we use a laser to treat this infection.
The harmony laser system uses a light which transmits through the nail plate and into the nail bed where it is absorbed by the pigment in the fungus causing them to die and infection to resolve.
During the treatment, the laser heats up the nail bed breaking the hard outer shell of the fungal spore. This heat is then absorbed by the fungal spore, deactivating it.
