If you’re researching non-surgical cosmetic treatments for the first time, it’s very easy to get confused between anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers. Both are injectables, both are popular, and both can take several years off your appearance, but they work in completely different ways and are designed to treat very different concerns.
In my experience, the most common mistake patients make is assuming one does the job of the other. Knowing the difference will not only help you understand what your face actually needs, but it will also help you have a far more productive conversation at your consultation.

Anti-Wrinkle Injections vs Dermal Fillers at Health & Aesthetics
How Each Treatment Works
Anti-Wrinkle Injections
Anti-wrinkle injections use a purified protein to temporarily relax the muscles responsible for creating expression lines. When we repeatedly frown, squint or raise our eyebrows, the skin above those muscles folds and creases. Over time, those creases become etched in, even when the face is at rest. By relaxing the muscle, the overlying skin is allowed to smooth out.
The treatment is quick, typically 15–20 minutes, and most patients return to normal activities straight away. Results take one to two weeks to fully develop and last around three to four months, although with regular treatment many patients find they can extend this interval over time.
Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are injectable gels, most commonly made from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body. Rather than addressing muscle movement, fillers work by physically adding volume beneath the skin. This makes them ideal for areas where tissue has been lost through ageing, or where a patient simply wants more definition or enhancement.
Results are immediate, and depending on the product used and the area treated, they can last anywhere from six to eighteen months. At Health & Aesthetics we use premium filler brands including Teoxane or Revanesse, selected for their safety profile, longevity and natural feel.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Anti‑Wrinkle Injections | Dermal Fillers | |

| Not ideal for | Adding volume, lip enhancement, deep structural folds | Dynamic expression lines such as forehead or crow’s feet |
| Results visible | 2–14 days (full effect at 2 weeks) | Immediately, with final result settling over 2–4 weeks |
| Duration | 3–4 months on average; can extend with regular treatment | 6–18 months depending on product, area and metabolism |
| Downtime | Minimal; minor redness or small bumps at injection sites, usually resolves within hours | Mild swelling and possible bruising for 3–7 days, particularly in the lips |
| Pain level | Low; tiny needle, most patients find it very tolerable | Low to moderate; most fillers contain lidocaine; numbing cream can be used |
| Reversible? | Yes, naturally metabolised over time. Cannot be dissolved but will wear off | Yes; hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved immediately with hyaluronidase (Hyalase®) |
| Can combine? | Yes; frequently combined with dermal fillers for a more complete rejuvenation | Yes; combining both treatments is common and often gives the most natural result |
Which One Do I Actually Need?
This is the question I get asked most often in consultations, and the honest answer is: it depends on what you’re trying to achieve. Here is a simple framework:
- Choose anti-wrinkle injections if your main concern is lines that appear when you move your face: forehead lines when you raise your brows, frown lines between the eyes, or crow’s feet when you smile.
- Choose dermal fillers if you want to restore volume that’s been lost through ageing, enhance your lips, sharpen your jawline, or soften deep folds that are present even at rest.
- Consider both if you have dynamic expression lines and volume loss, which is very common from the mid-thirties onwards. Combining the two treatments is sometimes called a liquid facelift and tends to give the most naturally refreshed result.
- If you’re unsure, book a consultation. You don’t need to come in with a decision already made. That’s exactly what the consultation is for.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have both treatments at the same time?
Yes, and it’s quite common. Anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers complement each other well because they target different aspects of ageing. Many patients have both in the same appointment. We’ll advise on safe and sensible combinations during your consultation based on your individual anatomy and goals.
Which lasts longer?
Dermal fillers generally last longer, typically anywhere from six to eighteen months, depending on the product and area. Anti-wrinkle injections typically last three to four months, though patients who treat regularly often find they can go longer between appointments as the muscle gradually weakens with repeated relaxation.
Which is more painful?
Both treatments involve small injections and are very well tolerated by most patients. Anti-wrinkle injections use an extremely fine needle and most patients find them almost pain-free. Dermal fillers can cause a little more sensation, particularly in sensitive areas like the lips; however, most filler products contain lidocaine (a local anaesthetic) built in, and numbing cream can be applied beforehand.
Are the results reversible?
Anti-wrinkle injections wear off naturally over time and cannot be reversed, but they’re temporary by nature. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, on the other hand, can be dissolved quickly and safely using an enzyme called hyaluronidase (we use Hyalase®). This is one of the reasons we only use hyaluronic acid fillers at Health & Aesthetics, giving both patient and practitioner a reliable safety net.
Do I need a consultation before treatment?
Yes, always. At Health & Aesthetics we do not offer same-day injectable treatments for new patients. A proper consultation allows us to assess your anatomy, understand your goals, take a full medical history and discuss realistic outcomes, none of which can be rushed. It’s a medical appointment, not a sales pitch.
Which Treatment Is Right for You?
Both anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers are among the most requested treatments at Health & Aesthetics, and for good reason. When chosen correctly and administered well, they produce results that look natural and feel confidence-boosting rather than done. The key is knowing which one, or which combination, is appropriate for your face and your goals.
