A weak chin or small jaw is one of the most common concerns we see at the clinic, and one of the most rewarding to treat. Often it isn’t the chin itself that patients notice first, but the knock-on effect it has on the rest of the face: a jawline that lacks definition, a neck that looks heavier than it is, or a profile that feels “off” in photographs. Get the chin and jaw right and the whole face tends to fall into balance.
There are really two categories of patient here, and it’s worth knowing which one you fall into.
You were born this way. Chin and jaw projection are largely down to genetics and bone structure. Some people simply have a smaller or more recessed mandible, known as retrognathia in more pronounced cases, or a jawline that was always narrower and less defined. There’s nothing wrong with this, it’s just anatomy, but it’s the reason some people have felt self-conscious about their profile since their teens.
Ageing has caught up with you. Bone remodels as we age, and the jaw is no exception. The chin and jawline can lose volume and projection over the years, while soft tissue in the lower face starts to descend. This combination is what creates jowling and, very often, a double chin, even in patients who were never overweight and never had a weak chin or small jaw when they were younger.
I always tell patients that a weak jawline and a double chin are frequently two sides of the same problem rather than separate issues. If the chin doesn’t project enough, fat and skin have nowhere to go but to pool beneath it. Treating the chin often improves the appearance of the neck without touching the neck at all.
Our consultations are in-depth and tailored to you, creating a bespoke treatment plan catering to all of your concerns.
ConsultationThis isn’t a treatment you should have without a proper consultation, and I’d be wary of anywhere that offers it otherwise. During your assessment we look at your chin in profile and from the front, we consider how it relates to your nose and lips (facial proportion matters enormously here), and we check your bite and jaw movement, since chin shape is tied up with dental and skeletal factors as well as soft tissue.
We’ll also discuss what “better” looks like to you. A stronger, more chiselled jawline is a common request from male patients, while female patients more often ask for a softer, rounded projection that lengthens the lower face slightly without looking angular. There’s no single correct chin, only the right one for your face.
For most patients, non-surgical treatment with dermal filler is our first choice, and honestly, for the majority it’s all they’ll ever need. It’s quick, the results are immediate, and there’s very little downtime.
We mainly use Revanesse fillers for jaw and chin contouring. It’s our first choice because of how it handles and lifts, which suits the structural work this area needs, and results typically last 18 to 24 months.
Many patients are familiar with the Teoxane range, so where it’s the better fit for a particular jaw shape, or where a patient specifically asks for it, we’re also well versed in using RHA 4 for contouring and volume, and Pure Sense Ultra Deep for restoring structure in a chin and jawline that have lost projection through ageing.
Having more than one product range available isn’t just for variety’s sake. Every jaw is a different shape and every patient’s skin behaves differently, so being able to choose the right filler for the job, rather than using the same product on everyone, is what gets a natural result.
The technique matters as much as the product. Placed well, filler can extend the chin forward, sharpen the jawline from ear to chin, and soften the transition into the neck. Placed badly, it can look bolted on, which is why I’d always recommend seeing a doctor with specific experience in jaw and chin contouring rather than someone who treats it as an afterthought to lip filler.
Occasionally a chin is weak enough, or a bite misaligned enough, that filler alone won’t give a natural result. In these cases we’ll discuss surgical options and refer on appropriately. We’d always rather tell you honestly that surgery is the better route than push a non-surgical treatment that won’t deliver what you’re after.
Treatment usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. We use topical or local anaesthetic, so discomfort is minimal. There may be some swelling and bruising for a few days, and we’ll talk you through aftercare before you leave. Most patients are back to normal activities the same or the next day, with final results settling in over one to two weeks as any swelling resolves.
