Causes of jowls
Jowls are caused by a combination of issues. As we age
- Our skeletal structure slowly diminishes with age. Hence, the jaw becomes smaller and thinner. The cheekbones also become flatter and thinner.
- We lose collagen in the deep tissues (called the SMAS) so the upper tissues begin to sag.
- There is also loss of key volume in our face since the fat pockets in the middle part of our face deflate.
- The skin also becomes thinner and looser due to the loss of collagen and elastin.
When all of these factors combine, the face starts to sag and this results in s jowls and lines in the lower face.
Treatment for jowls
Ultherapy is the number one treatment for jowls and is FDA approved meaning it is clinically proven to lift the face. Ultherapy uses micro-focused ultrasound to create micro-wounds into the deep tissues (SMAS) of skin. This stimulates the production of collagen and elastin creating a lift and reducing the appearance of jowls.
Fillers are a fantastic option for those looking to restore volume to the face. At Health & Aesthetics, we use Juvederm Vycross range fillers which are FDA approved and so are safe and effective. It is important to understand who is injecting you and what is being injected as the UK is extremely under-regulated. Learn more about this here. By injecting these fillers into key points (MD Codes) you can lift the face and reduce the appearance of jowls.
