Botox side effects and health concerns

Posted on 23rd March 2025 by Dr Rekha Tailor

Botox, or botulinum toxin, is one of the most widely used aesthetic medicine treatments in the UK, commonly used for smoothing wrinkles and fine lines. At Health & Aesthetics, we use the brand Nuceiva, a high-purity form of botulinum toxin A. Despite the popularity of treatments like Botox or Nuceiva, many patients understandably have concerns around safety and side effects.

We believe in giving our patients honest, clear information about treatments. Here are the top questions people ask about the side effects and health risks of Botox – answered transparently, so you can make a confident and informed decision.

1. What are the most common side effects of Botox or Nuceiva?

Like any medical procedure, Botox and Nuceiva are likely to have some side effects. The vast majority of Botox side effects are mild and temporary. These often include:

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Mild bruising
  • Light bleeding
  • Tenderness or a feeling of tightness in the injected area

These effects are completely normal and usually nothing to worry about. They’re part of your body’s natural response to the injection process.

2. Are there any serious side effects?

Serious side effects from Botox or Nuceiva are very rare, but they can happen. They usually result from an allergic reaction to the substance or from poorly administered treatment.

Some symptoms of an allergic reaction include:

  • Breathing problems
  • Swallowing difficulties
  • Facial swelling
  • A rash and itchiness
  • Vision problems

If you experience any of the above, or don’t feel right during your treatment, let your doctor know straight away. If you experience these symptoms after treatment, contact your doctor immediately.

3. How can poorly administered Botox impact the results?

Although not technically side effects, when Botox or Nuceiva is not administered correctly, it can lead to a range of unwanted results such as a frozen expression, drooping of the eye lids of eyebrows, raised or over-arched eyebrows, and a droopy or lopsided smile.

This is more likely to happen when treatments are performed by someone without adequate training or with limited anatomical knowledge. We always recommend doing enough research around your chosen doctor and clinic to make sure they have plenty of experience in injectables.

When injected by a Dr Tailor, the risk of drooping or unwanted results is very low. If drooping does occur, it usually resolves within a few weeks.

4. How can I minimise the risk of side effects?

The most effective way to reduce the risk of complications is to choose a medically qualified injector. Botox and Nuceiva should only be administered by a trained medical professional with experience in aesthetic injectables.

The UK injectables industry can be under-regulated, so don’t hesitate to:

  • Ask to see qualifications
  • Check patient reviews
  • Ensure a thorough consultation is offered
  • Trust your instincts—if something doesn’t feel right, walk away.
