Does rosacea get worse with age?

Posted on 17th July 2025 by Dr Rekha Tailor

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that affects millions of people worldwide, often beginning in adulthood and becoming more noticeable over time. One of the most common concerns for those dealing with rosacea is – does rosacea get worse with age?

The answer is not always straightforward, but understanding how rosacea develops and progresses can help manage it more effectively, especially as we age.

What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a long-term inflammatory skin condition that primarily affects the face. It typically begins with redness across the cheeks, nose, forehead, or chin. Over time, this redness can become more persistent and may be accompanied by visible blood vessels, swelling, thickened skin and in some cases, red fluid-filled bumps.

These physical manifestations can also cause uncomfortable symptoms in some people, like flushing of the skin, itching or burning.

It’s not exactly clear what causes rosacea – it could be a combination of both genetic and environmental factors. But what is known is that some environmental triggers can make symptoms of rosacea worse, for example, alcohol, exercise, hot drinks, sunlight, spicy foods and stress.

Does rosacea get worse with age?

Unfortunately, for most people, rosacea does tend to get worse with age. Without proper treatment and management, the condition often becomes more persistent and severe over time. Here’s why:

  • Skin changes with age: As we age, our skin loses collagen and elasticity. This results in the skin losing structure and strength, leading to thinner, less elastic skin. This thinning skin can make symptoms of rosacea more visible. Blood vessels can also become more fragile and prone to damage with age, which can worsen the flushing and redness associated with rosacea.
  • Exposure to triggers: Over time, repeated exposure to common rosacea triggers like the sun, alcohol and stress can cause flare-ups to become more frequent and intense. This can be managed by avoiding triggers where possible.
  • Untreated rosacea: When rosacea is not diagnosed or treated early, it can progress from mild redness to more severe symptoms such as permanent facial redness, inflammatory lesions, and skin thickening.

Does rosacea go away without treatment?

Rosacea rarely resolves on its own. While symptoms can improve temporarily, especially by avoiding known triggers, untreated rosacea generally returns and may worsen over time.

But the good news is that with proper care and treatments, the condition can be managed effectively at any age.

Treatment options for rosacea

Rosacea severity can vary widely. While some people experience only mild redness, others may struggle with more advanced symptoms, especially later in life. At Health & Aesthetics, we take a personalised approach to treatment, assessing your unique signs and symptoms to recommend the most effective treatment options. In many cases, a combination of treatments are most effective.

When it comes to rosacea that is worsening with age, we tend to recommend treatments to improve skin health and the barrier function of the skin. Some of our popular treatment options include:

Skin care

Using tailored skin care products can help to improve overall skin health and prevent rosacea symptoms from worsening. Our medical-grade skin care range, ZO Skin Health by Dr Zein Obagi, has a wide variety of products that can improve rosacea symptoms, including:

  • Rozatrol: Our hero product for rosacea, helping to repair your skin’s barrier function and reduce inflammation.
  • Complexion Clarifying Serum: A water-based serum clinically proven to reduce oil, congestion, and visible redness, helping the skin to look clear and balanced.
  • Oil Control Pads: Helping to improve the barrier function of the skin and remove the excess oil that can lead to inflammation.

We have a range of other products available to help improve rosacea and the type of products we recommend changes based on individual skin type and skin concerns.

Exosome treatment

Exosome treatment is an advanced regenerative therapy which harnesses stem-cell-derived exosomes rich in growth factors and signalling proteins. These exosomes help to calm inflammation, encourage the production of collagen and elastin, and improve overall skin resilience. For patients with chronic redness or damaged skin barriers, exosome treatments may enhance skin recovery and reduce sensitivity, especially when combined with other treatments.

Polynucleotides

An emerging option for rosacea management is polynucleotides. This regenerative treatment promotes skin healing, reduces inflammation, and strengthens the skin barrier – making them particularly helpful for sensitive, rosacea-prone skin that has thinned with age. While not a standalone cure, polynucleotides can support overall skin health and complement other rosacea treatments.

Laser treatments

Laser treatments can also be combined with other rosacea therapies for enhanced results. These treatments work by targeting the dilated blood vessels responsible for facial redness. The laser energy causes these vessels to collapse, after which the body naturally breaks down – significantly reducing their visibility and improving overall skin tone.
