Hands are often one of the biggest tell-tale signs of getting older. Hand Rejuvenation can be achieved with dermal fillers and laser treatments.

When you think of the common signs of ageing, the hands are not normally the first thing you think about.

You may think of greying hair, which can be easily disguised through colouring: or wrinkles around the eyes, mouth and forehead, which can be minimised by a plethora of creams and cosmetic treatments.

However, look at someone’s hands and they can often be a giveaway.

The hands are usually one of the first places to show signs of ageing, and holding back the years in this highly visible area of the body isn’t easy.  In recent years Madonna has rarely been spotted without a pair of gloves, proving that even her strenuous health and fitness regime cannot halt the passage of time.

So why does our skin age faster on our hands than elsewhere?

Mainly because, unlike other areas of the body, they are permanently exposed, whether that be to chemicals, smoke or UV radiation.  We tend not to apply sun cream to the hands as regularly as we do the face and this makes them susceptible to sunspots and accelerated aging.

For women, this is exacerbated by a drop in the levels of oestrogen in the body, around the time of the menopause.  Oestrogen stimulates collagen production, which helps to keep the skin on the hands plump and youthful.  Once this drops, the skin can become thin and veins appear more prominent.

What can be done?

Thankfully, there are a number of treatments that can make a dramatic improvement to the appearance of the hands.

At health + aesthetics these include Dermal FillersChemical Peels and Laser Treatment.  Used either together or on their own, they have been proven to rejuvenate and increase our patients’ confidence.

Dermal Fillers can be injected into the hands to make them look plumper, so that bones, tendons and veins are not as visible. It is a quick and painless procedure that achieves almost instant results with no real recovery time afterwards.  At health + aesthetics we use only high quality, premium grade fillers that will typically last around 12 – 18 months.

Chemical Peels can help to banish brown spots and improve the quality and texture of the skin on the hands.  This is again a very quick and simple procedure.  Patients typically need a course of 3 treatments to see optimal results.

Laser Treatment can also help to get rid of brown spots by using light energy to break up the pigment.  The body’s natural mechanisms then heal the treated skin, leaving it looking more uniform in colour and texture. Once again, treatment is fast, safe and painless.  You may need a course of up to 4 treatments.
