HEV Light and Skin Damage: What You Need to Know

Posted on 5th January 2026 by Dr Rekha Tailor

We’re all glued to screens these days – phones, tablets, laptops, and televisions. Most of us understand the risks of UV rays from the sun, but fewer are aware that blue light, or HEV light, emitted by screens can also affect our skin. Below is a brief overview of how excess screen time can adversely affect facial skin and some suggestions on how to mitigate the effects.

What is HEV Light?

High-Energy Visible (HEV) light, better known as blue light, sits in the 400–500 nm range of the visible spectrum. HEV rays penetrates deeply into the skin, reaching the dermis where collagen and elastin are found. These proteins are vital for helping the skin to be firm and youthful. HEV rays do not cause sunburn like UV rays.

How Does HEV Light Affect Your Skin?

Lines & Wrinkles

Blue light creates free radicals, leading to oxidative stress that damages collagen and elastin.

Over many years, this can result in loss of firmness, sagging skin, fine lines and premature ageing.

Hyperpigmentation

HEV light can stimulate the cells that produce melanin, resulting in dark spots and an uneven complexion, especially in those already susceptible to pigmentation issues.

Inflammation & Sensitivity

Blue light damages the skin’s protective barrier and causes inflammation, resulting in redness, dryness, and heightened sensitivity.

Tech Neck & Expression Lines

Extended screen time promotes poor posture and repetitive motions, which can deepen lines around the neck and jaw.

Is It as Harmful as UV?

While sunlight is still the primary cause of skin ageing, HEV light contributes to the problem. The effects accumulate; the more time you spend in front of screens, the more pronounced the impact.

How to Protect Your Skin from HEV Light

Daily Sunscreen

Select a broad-spectrum sunscreen that also protects against HEV light. ZO Skin Health provides advanced sunscreens, using mineral ingredients such as zinc oxide and iron oxide, which are very effective at blocking blue light.

Antioxidant Skincare

Antioxidants work to neutralise free radicals generated by HEV light. ZO Skin Health’s Daily Power Defence and Brightalive Skin Brightener are both excellent choices for fortifying the skin barrier and diminishing pigmentation.

Advanced Treatments at Health & Aesthetics

There are a variety of advanced medical treatments available to treat the damage caused by HEV light and rejuvenate the skin.

Hydrafacial treatment

This treatment involves deep cleansing, exfoliation and infusion of antioxidants followed by LED light treatment to treat oxidative stress.

Laser Skin Rejuvenation

This treatment repairs damage caused to the skin by HEV light and stimulates collagen production.

Secret RF

This treatment combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy to stimulate collagen, tighten skin, and improve texture and so reverses the signs of ageing.

Microneedling treatment

This treatment stimulates the production of collagen and elastin and so improves skin elasticity and reduces the appearance of fine lines. The results can be boosted if combined with Exosomes (Purasomes) treatment.

Polynucleotides

This is an injectable regenerative treatment to boost cellular repair, improve hydration, and enhance skin elasticity. This is an ideal treatment for reversing oxidative stress damage.

Exosomes (Purasomes)

This is the latest regenerative treatment which delivers powerful growth factors and signalling molecules to repair damage, rejuvenate skin and restore youthful radiance.

Lifestyle Adjustments

Use filters on devices such as PCs, reduce brightness of the screen, and take regular breaks. Screens should be at eye level to avoid tech neck.

Screens are an unavoidable part of modern life, but their impact on skin health is real. HEV light accelerates ageing, pigmentation, and inflammation—but with the right skincare and treatments, you can protect and rejuvenate your skin.

At Health & Aesthetics, we combine cutting-edge technology with medical expertise to help you maintain youthful, healthy skin. Our range of advanced ZO Skin Health products and advanced treatments will help to repair damage and keep the skin radiant and glowing.
