Is IPL safe? Exploring the potential side effects
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) remains a popular treatment option for a variety of skin concerns, from pigmentation and redness to unwanted hair. But with popularity comes curiosity, and sometimes concern. Common questions we often hear from patients are: “Is IPL safe?” or “What IPL side effects I should know about?”.
While we don’t offer IPL treatments at Health & Aesthetics, we believe in empowering people with transparent, evidence-backed information about a variety of options. In this article, we explore the safety profile of IPL, the common and rare IPL side effects, and some alternatives to IPL, helping you to make an informed decision about the right treatment for you.
What is Intense Pulse Light?
IPL is a non-invasive treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to target pigmentation, redness and rosacea, sun spots, acne, and a range of other skin conditions. It’s often confused with laser therapy, which targets more precise spots on the skin. But IPL uses multiple wavelengths, making it less specific and more diffused in its targeting. In turn, this means IPL isn’t as effective as laser treatments, which are more targeted.
IPL is often used to treat a wide area and surface level concerns. However, like most treatments, IPL can have some side effects.
Is IPL Safe?
Generally speaking, IPL is considered safe when performed by a trained and experienced practitioner using regulated equipment. However, safety doesn’t mean risk-free. The safety of IPL depends on several factors like:
- The skill and training of the practitioner
- The quality of the device
- Proper consultation to assess patient suitability
- Adherence to pre- and post-treatment guidelines.
It’s vital to make sure you choose a regulated and reputable clinic for any treatments, including IPL.
Common IPL side effects
Like any light-based therapy, IPL can cause temporary side effects, even when performed correctly. The most frequently reported include:
Redness and swelling: Mild redness and swelling are the most common reactions post-IPL. These effects usually subside within a few hours to a few days.
Skin sensitivity: The treated area may feel tender, warm, or slightly itchy. You might be advised to avoid hot showers, saunas, or sun exposure immediately after treatment to avoid further discomfort.
Less common IPL side effects
Though uncommon, more serious IPL side effects can occur, especially when IPL is administered incorrectly or on unsuitable skin types.
Burns: IPL devices emit intense light, and improper settings can overheat the skin, resulting in burns or blisters which may scar. This is one of the key reasons it’s important to choose a reputable clinic with trained professionals.
Pigment changes: Some people experience hyperpigmentation (darkening) of the skin in the surrounding skin of the targeted area. This can be more likely in individuals with darker skin tones.
Infections: While it’s rare for IPL to cause an infection, the heat can bring out an existing infection. For example, IPL on the face may bring out an infection such as a mouth ulcer or impetigo.
Worsen melasma: Melasma is a condition that causes brown or grey-brown patches to appear. IPL can worsen symptoms of melasma.
Why we don’t offer IPL at Health & Aesthetics
While IPL can deliver decent results for certain conditions, we choose not to offer IPL treatments at our clinic. Instead, we offer a range of advanced laser treatments and topical solutions to treat pigmentation-related concerns. Here’s why:
- Precision matters: Laser devices offer more accuracy than IPL. Lasers use a single wavelength to target specific regions, allowing for the targeted treatment of skin concerns with greater control than IPL.
- Customisation: By using sophisticated and state-of-the-art lasers, we can fine-tune the treatment to suit your unique skin tone, concern or tolerance – something IPL doesn’t offer with the same precision. We also offer a medical-grade skincare range with a wide variety of products that can be tailored specifically to meet your needs. This personalisation generally allows for more targeted and effective treatments than IPL.
Alternative treatments to IPL
If you’re concerned about the side effects of IPL or you’re exploring more effective treatments, there are lots of options available.
Laser treatments
Whether you’re treating pigmentation, redness or uneven skin tone, lasers can be adjusted to suit your skin type and concern. Some common laser alternatives we offer at Health & Aesthetics include:
- Excel V+ Pigmentation treatment: a treatment designed to target benign pigmentation issues like sun damage, brown spots, freckles and age spots.
- Excel V+ Rosacea and Thread Veins: a laser that targets blood vessels and pigments with abnormalities, for example, in conditions such as rosacea.
- Laser Genesis: a gentle laser treatment that stimulates collagen and improves circulation, reducing redness and tackling conditions like sun damage, fine lines and age spots.
- Alma Hybrid: a laser resurfacing treatment offering a deep rejuvenation to the skin, key for those suffering with scarring, aged, or sun-damaged skin.
Topical skincare treatments
In some cases, a non-invasive approach may be the best first step. Medical-grade topical products containing ingredients like retinoids and vitamin C, and supporting ingredients like antioxidants, exfoliants, and soothing ingredients, can help address mild pigmentation, redness, or texture issues over time.
Combined with professional skin consultations and, where appropriate, in-clinic treatments such as chemical peels, topical treatments can form an effective part of a long-term skin health plan especially for those not suitable for light-based treatments.
We have a range of products available and the type of products we recommend changes based on individual skin type and skin concerns.
