Lip Filler Facts: the truth behind the headlines

Posted on 25th May 2016 by Dr Rekha Tailor

Lip Fillers, it is fair to say, do have a bit of a reputation.  This is mostly down to pictures of celebrities boasting unnatural, pneumatic lips, or poor Lesley Ash, who became an unsuspecting poster-girl for lip fillers gone bad when she underwent a botched treatment back in 2002, carried out by an unqualified surgeon using permanent liquefied silicone.

Thankfully, permanent lip fillers are now a thing of the past in the UK.
Today’s sophisticated fillers are made of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a substance found naturally in the body.  Administered subtly, by an experienced aesthetic doctor, such as myself, the natural looking results you can expect are about as far from a ‘trout pout’ as you can imagine.

What you need to know about Lip Fillers

Lip fillers are one of the most Googled beauty search terms in the UK.  Why?  Because the lips often become thinner and lose definition as we age.  There are obviously many cosmetic products on the market (such as serums and gels) that may provide a temporary boost, but their effects are not long-lasting.

Lip fillers, in contrast, can add plumpness and restore volume for up to 18 months at a time.  At health + aesthetics we use only the safest and highest quality hyaluronic acid fillers, including Juvederm, Emervel and Belotero.   What’s more, our fillers are all fully reversible and can be easily removed in the rare instance that you are not fully happy with the results.

The whole procedure takes less than an hour, including a local anaesthetic which is administered around 15 minutes prior to treatment.  The filler is then carefully injected into the lips using a very fine needle.  You will not experience any pain during this time, but there may be a little mild swelling or bruising afterwards, which you can easily cover up with make-up.

The results are impressive.  Your lips will look completely natural, yet fuller and more defined.  It can also help to turn the corners of your mouth upwards and create a more youthful overall appearance.  Many patients also report feeling more confident and happier with their smile.

For optimal results you may wish to undergo fillers elsewhere at the same time.
