Nuceiva vs Botox: What’s the difference?

Posted on 23rd May 2025 by Dr Rekha Tailor

In the world of aesthetic medicine, anti-wrinkle injections have become a cornerstone treatment for those seeking a smoother, more youthful appearance. Among the most recognised names in this space is Botox®, a treatment that has been a household name for decades. However, a newer option, Nuceiva®, is gaining attention as a promising alternative.

In this blog, we’re going to break down the similarities and differences to help you make an informed decision about whether Nuceiva or Botox is right for you.

What are Nuceiva and Botox?

Both Nuceiva and Botox are botulinum toxin type A products. They work by blocking nerve signals to specific muscles, temporarily relaxing the muscles. This can reduce muscle movement in targeted areas, softening the appearance of lines and wrinkles in the surrounding skin. Overall, this can result in smoother skin and a refreshed, youthful look.

So, are there any real differences between the treatments?

Nuceiva vs Botox

There’s no denying that Nuceiva and Botox are similar treatments. They both have the same active ingredient, botulinum toxin type A. They’re also both used to treat similar skin concerns such as wrinkles, fine lines and signs of ageing, and they can treat the same areas.

But there are some subtle differences between the treatments:

Manufacturing and purification

Firstly, Botox and Nuceiva are manufactured by different companies. Botox is produced by Allergan, whereas Nuceiva is made by Evolus. There may also be some minor differences in how Botox and Nuceiva are produced, and we understand that Nuceiva is a slightly purer form of botulinum toxin than Botox.

Usages

Botox has been used for many years in both aesthetic and medical procedures. For instance, it can be injected into the armpits to stop excess sweating, and it can also be used to smooth out wrinkles in the face. Alternatively, Nuceiva is a much newer product and has been developed specifically for cosmetic use. It isn’t licensed for medical use.

Nuceiva can also be used if someone becomes resistant to Botox after several treatments.

Onset and duration

Some people report that Nuceiva kicks in a bit faster (within 2-3 days) compared to Botox (usually 3-5 days). Both treatments offer similar longevity, with Botox lasting around 12 weeks, and Nuceiva lasting a little longer, at around 14 weeks. How long each treatment lasts will also depend on factors like individual metabolism, dosage and treatment area.

Results and effectiveness

Clinically, both treatments offer comparable results. Studies and real-world results suggest there’s little difference between Nuceiva vs Botox in terms of wrinkle reduction. At Health & Aesthetics, we find there is less diffusion of Nuceiva compared to Botox. This means it’s less likely to spread outside of the targeted area and therefore offers a more precise approach.

But it’s important to note that your results can depend on lots of factors such as how Nuceiva or Botox interacts with your individual facial anatomy, and the skill and experience of your injector.

It’s vital to do research prior to having Nuceiva or Botox to make sure you’re picking a clinic with:

  • A reliable reputation and wide portfolio of examples
  • Experienced and educated staff
  • Highest-industry standards for safety

Safety and side effects

Whether you’re considering Nuceiva vs Botox, both are generally considered safe when administered by trained professionals. Common side effects of both treatments include bruising at the injection site, mild swelling and redness. More serious side effects like allergic reactions can happen, but these are very uncommon – especially with Nuceiva which uses an advanced purification process that makes resistance less likely.

It’s important to follow aftercare instructions and avoid touching the area post-injection to minimise complications and promote healing.
