Rosacea vs acne: what’s the difference?

Posted on 17th June 2025 by Dr Rekha Tailor

When it comes to skin conditions, rosacea and acne are two of the most commonly confused. At a glance, they can look quite similar – both can cause redness and bumps – but they are distinct conditions that often require different treatment approaches.

If you’ve ever wondered about the comparison between rosacea vs acne, you’re not alone. In this blog, we’ll break down how to identify each condition and the best treatment options available.

What is acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when follicles on the skin become clogged with oil (sebum) and dead skin cells. It typically presents as blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, or cysts. Acne commonly appears on the face, but can also affect the back, chest, and shoulders.

Acne is primarily driven by changes in hormone levels. It’s most common in younger people, but can impact people at any age.

What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that primarily affects the face. It typically appears as persistent redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes small, red bumps that can be filled with fluid. This is due to excess sebum blocking the pores, which then become infected. These can look similar to breakouts associated with acne, making rosacea vs acne comparisons especially confusing.

It can also cause itching, burning or flushing of the skin, which can be uncomfortable. In some cases, rosacea can also lead to thickening of the skin, especially in areas around the nose.

The cause of rosacea isn’t fully understood, but some environmental triggers can make symptoms worse, such as alcohol, sunlight, exercise, stress and hot drinks.

Unlike acne, rosacea often develops later in life, usually after age 30. It’s not a medical concern, but it can impact self-esteem and confidence. Early detection and treatment of rosacea is key to long-term solutions.

Diagnosing rosacea vs acne

Rosacea and acne share some common appearances. They can both cause redness, inflammation, and fluid-filled bumps. But getting a correct diagnosis is crucial for effective management of each condition. At Health & Aesthetics, we will diagnose your condition based on lots of factors, including:

  • Your medical history
  • An in-depth examination of your skin using our Visia skin imaging device
  • Trigger identification

From here, we can develop personalised treatment plans to suit your skin, whether you’ve got acne or rosacea.

Treatments for rosacea vs acne

Although acne and rosacea are different conditions, they often share similar treatment options. We’re going to run through some of the most effective treatments for acne and/or rosacea that we use at Health & Aesthetics.

ZO Skin Health

The first thing we recommend for both acne and rosacea is using our medical-grade skin care range, ZO Skin Health by Dr Zein Obagi. We have a range of products that can be tailored to either acne or rosacea.

  • For acne, we have products that help to target oil production, and cleanse and exfoliate the skin, removing bacteria and dead skin cells.
  • For rosacea, we have products such as Rozatrol , which work to specifically repair the skin’s barrier function, reducing overall inflammation.

We also have a range of products available to help improve overall skin texture and restore a healthy skin barrier, which can improve symptoms of both acne and rosacea. The type of products we recommend varies between individuals based on skin type, skin concerns, and if you have acne, how active your acne is.

Alongside ZO Skin Health, we can use other treatments for acne and rosacea, including:

Hydrafacials

A Hydrafacial is a deep cleansing treatment, helping to cleanse, extract, and hydrate the skin. It removes impurities from the skin and then hydrates the skin with intense moisturisers and skin boosters. It’s a soothing, non-invasive and non-irritating treatment, so it can be effective for both acne and rosacea.

When it comes to acne, Hydrafacials can help to remove all debris from pores in the skin, helping to reduce breakouts and also reduce the appearance of scarring. For those with rosacea, a Hydrafacial can offer a gentle exfoliation and hydration boost, helping to reduce redness associated with the condition.

We can personalise Hydrafacials, using skin boosters to target specific needs like acne or rosacea.

LED light therapy

Dermalux Tri-Wave MD LED light therapy is an award-winning treatment which is clinically proven to help with healing, promote collagen production, and kill bacteria on the skin. It applies light wavelengths to the skin, which in turn, improves skin cell functioning.

LED light therapy can be used to help improve symptoms of both acne and rosacea.

Chemical peels for acne

Chemical peels can also form part of acne treatments. A chemical peel is a chemical exfoliation. They can help to rejuvenate the complexion, smooth the skin, improve skin texture and reduce scarring and pigmentation associated with acne.

We can also tailor peels to individual needs, offering a gentle or more dramatic result, depending on the severity of your acne.

Laser treatments for rosacea

Laser treatments can also be used alongside other treatments for rosacea. During this treatment, a laser causes the blood vessels (which cause the redness) to collapse, making them less visible. The collapsed vessels are then naturally absorbed by the body, reducing the appearance of them entirely.

Exosome treatment

Exosome treatment can also be used alongside other treatments for both acne and rosacea. This is an advanced regenerative therapy that uses exosomes to deliver growth factors and anti-inflammatory signals into the skin.

Which treatment is right for me?

At Health & Aesthetics, we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all treatment approach. That’s why every treatment plan begins with a comprehensive consultation to assess your skin and understand your concerns.

We offer a wide range of advanced, non-surgical treatments for both acne and rosacea. In some cases – especially when acne is severe or cystic, – we may recommend external support. For example, Roaccutane (isotretinoin) is a powerful prescription medication that can only be prescribed by a dermatologist or specialist doctor. While we don’t offer Roaccutane treatment in-house, we can help identify when it’s the right option for you and signpost to further support.
