SkinVive vs Profhilo: What Is the Difference?

Posted on 28th June 2026 by Dr Rekha Tailor

SkinVive and Profhilo come up together in many conversations. I have with patients who are researching skin quality treatments. Both are injectables, both contain hyaluronic acid, both improve how the skin looks and neither adds volume or changes facial structure. On the surface, they sound almost identical. In practice, they are meaningfully different, and knowing which one is right for you depends on understanding what each one actually does inside the skin.

I offer both at Health & Aesthetics. This blog explains the differences clearly, gives you my honest view on who each treatment suits best, and addresses the questions I am asked most often. As always, the right answer for your skin comes from a proper consultation rather than a comparison article, but this should give you a solid foundation.

SkinVive by Juvederm: Precision Hydration and Glow

SkinVive is made by Allergan Aesthetics, part of AbbVie, the company behind Juvederm. It uses lightly crosslinked hyaluronic acid delivered as a series of tiny, precise microdroplets injected intradermally, meaning just beneath the surface of the skin itself rather than into the deeper tissue.

The HA in SkinVive stays where it is placed. It attracts and binds water within the dermis, creating a reservoir of hydration that improves skin texture, smoothness and radiance from within. Because the injection is superficial and the product does not spread, the result is a very even, controlled improvement in skin quality across the treated area. Most patients notice their skin looks clearer, smoother and more luminous within a few days of treatment.

SkinVive is primarily indicated for the cheeks and can be combined with other treatments for the neck and décolleté. It does not change the shape of your face, add volume or provide structural lift. That is intentional: SkinVive was designed purely as a skin quality treatment, and it does that job very well. Treatment takes around fifteen to thirty minutes, and the results typically last six to nine months. One session is usually sufficient, with maintenance at five to six months.

The crosslinked difference

One of the less-discussed but clinically relevant differences between SkinVive and Profhilo is the crosslinking of the HA. Profhilo uses non-crosslinked HA, which means it flows freely through the tissue after injection. SkinVive uses lightly crosslinked HA, which means the product stays precisely where it is placed. This is what gives SkinVive its controlled, even distribution and is part of why it is well suited to the delicate surface layer of the skin.

Profhilo: Bioremodelling from Within

Profhilo is made by IBSA using a patented technology called NAHYCO, which thermally bonds high and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid without chemical crosslinkers. The resulting product has an exceptionally high HA concentration, 64mg per 2ml syringe, and a fluid consistency that allows it to spread freely through the tissue once injected.

Profhilo is administered using the BAP technique: five specific injection points on each side of the face, chosen to allow the product to diffuse widely through the tissue. Unlike SkinVive, Profhilo does not stay where it is placed. It spreads beneath the skin, providing deep hydration across a broad area and triggering what is called bioremodelling: stimulation of the body’s own collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid production. The results improve skin quality, firmness and elasticity from within rather than simply hydrating the surface.

Profhilo requires two sessions, four weeks apart, with results building over four to eight weeks after the second session. The improvement is real and often striking, but it is more gradual than SkinVive and the mechanism is fundamentally different. Where SkinVive hydrates the dermis precisely, Profhilo bioremodels the deeper tissue over time.

Why Profhilo suits different areas

Because Profhilo spreads freely through the tissue, it is well suited to treating broader areas including the neck and décolleté, where diffuse bioremodelling across the whole area is more useful than targeted microdroplet placement. SkinVive is primarily indicated for the cheeks because the microdroplet technique gives precise, even coverage of a defined area. If your main concern is the neck or general skin laxity across the whole face, Profhilo is usually the more appropriate starting point.

The Key Differences

How the HA behaves after injection

This is the most fundamental distinction and worth understanding clearly. SkinVive’s crosslinked HA stays where it is placed, sitting within the dermal layer and hydrating that precise area. Profhilo’s non-crosslinked HA spreads freely through the tissue after injection, diffusing from the five BAP points across a much wider area. That spreading behaviour is what allows Profhilo to bioremodel the skin across broad zones; SkinVive’s staying behaviour is what gives it precise, even surface coverage. Neither is better in the abstract; they are just suited to different jobs.

Surface versus depth

SkinVive works at the level of the dermis, the layer just beneath the skin surface. Its effects are therefore primarily about what you see at the skin surface: smoothness, glow, hydration and texture refinement. Profhilo works in the deeper tissue as well as the dermis, where it triggers the production of new collagen and elastin. Its effects are therefore about structural skin quality: firmness, elasticity, and the kind of improvement that makes the skin itself feel different, not just look different.

Speed of results

SkinVive produces a visible result relatively quickly. Most patients notice the glow and improved smoothness within a few days of treatment, as the HA settles and begins attracting moisture. Profhilo takes longer. The bioremodelling process is biological and gradual, and the most noticeable improvement typically becomes apparent four to eight weeks after the second session. If you need to see a clear improvement quickly, SkinVive is the more immediate option.

Number of sessions

SkinVive is a single-session treatment for most patients, with an optional top-up at four weeks and maintenance every five to six months. Profhilo requires two sessions four weeks apart as the standard initial course, with maintenance every six to nine months. This difference is worth factoring into both time and budget planning.

The feel of the result

Patients who have had SkinVive often describe their skin feeling softer and looking more luminous and even, like their own skin but better. Patients who have had Profhilo often describe something slightly different: a bounciness or firmness to the skin that was not there before, alongside the hydration and glow. Both are very positive results; they reflect the different layers and mechanisms at work.

Which One Is Right for You?

Both SkinVive and Profhilo are excellent treatments and both have a clear place in a well-designed skin quality plan. Here is how I think about the choice in practice:

  • Choose SkinVive if your main goal is a glow and improved skin smoothness, particularly in the cheek area. If your skin feels dehydrated, looks dull or has a texture that you want to refine without changing your face in any structural way, SkinVive addresses exactly that. It is also a very good starting point for patients who are newer to injectables and want something subtle and precise.
  • Choose Profhilo if you are seeing signs of skin laxity, thinning or loss of firmness, particularly across the face or on the neck and décolleté. Profhilo’s bioremodelling effect addresses the structural quality of the skin in a way that SkinVive does not, and for patients whose concern is firmness and elasticity rather than surface glow, it is the more appropriate treatment.
  • Consider both if you want to address skin quality at different levels simultaneously. Profhilo for the deeper bioremodelling and broader coverage, SkinVive for the surface smoothness and cheek glow on top. This is a combination we use at Health & Aesthetics and the results tend to be particularly pleasing because the two treatments complement each other rather than duplicating each other.
  • Think about timing. SkinVive’s results appear more quickly and are more immediately visible, which makes it a sensible choice before a significant occasion. Profhilo’s results build more gradually and require two sessions, so allow at least six to eight weeks from the start of the course if you want the full effect in time for a specific date.
  • Think about your age and skin stage. SkinVive works well across a wide age range, including younger patients who want a preventative approach to maintaining skin quality. Profhilo tends to be most impactful from the mid-thirties onwards, when the natural decline in collagen and elastin production begins to become visible in the skin. That said, anatomy matters more than age, which is why a consultation is always the right starting point.

One thing I want to be clear about: these two treatments are not interchangeable. They look similar on paper because both use HA and neither adds volume, but the experience of each is different, the mechanism is different and the clinical effect is different. Choosing between them on the basis of price or availability without understanding which one your skin needs is unlikely to give you the best result.

My Honest View

I have been using both SkinVive and Profhilo in clinic and I have a lot of confidence in both. If I had to summarise them simply: SkinVive is the glow treatment and Profhilo is the firming treatment. They share a commitment to skin quality over structural change, but they achieve it by different means and at different depths.

What I find most useful about having both available is that they cover the skin quality picture from different angles. A patient who wants surface luminosity and smoothness is probably best served by SkinVive. A patient whose skin has started to feel less firm and bouncy is probably best served by Profhilo. A patient who wants both can have both, and the combination is genuinely effective.

The most important thing, as always, is to choose a treatment based on what your skin actually needs rather than what happens to be generating the most conversation at the moment. Both of these treatments are worth the conversation, and both deserve to be recommended for the right reasons.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can SkinVive and Profhilo be done at the same appointment?

Yes, in many cases. Because they are injected at different depths and work through different mechanisms, they do not interfere with each other. Whether we do both on the same day depends on your individual plan and how much we are addressing in a single session. Some patients prefer to start one treatment, see how the skin responds and then add the other. We will agree on the right approach during your consultation.

Which treatment is better for the neck?

Profhilo is generally the stronger choice for the neck. It is specifically indicated for this area and its free-spreading behaviour makes it well suited to bioremodelling the skin across the full surface of the neck rather than targeting specific points. SkinVive is primarily indicated for the cheeks, though it can be incorporated into broader skin quality plans for the neck depending on the patient’s concerns and goals.

I have heard Profhilo described as an injectable moisturiser. Is that accurate?

It is a useful shorthand, though not the whole picture. Profhilo does provide deep hydration, which is part of where that description comes from. But what makes it clinically distinctive is the bioremodelling: the stimulation of new collagen, elastin and HA within the tissue. That is more than moisturising; it is a biological change in the skin’s own structure. Calling it an injectable moisturiser is not wrong, but it undersells what it does.

Does SkinVive hurt?

Most patients find it very tolerable. SkinVive contains lidocaine, which numbs the area progressively during treatment, and the injections are very superficial and small. Most patients describe mild discomfort at most. We can apply a topical numbing cream beforehand for patients who prefer it.

Is Profhilo suitable if I have never had injectables before?

Yes, absolutely. Profhilo is one of the gentler starting points in aesthetic medicine precisely because it does not add volume or change structure. The main commitment is the two-session initial course and the slightly longer wait for full results. For patients who are new to injectables but serious about investing in their skin quality, it is an excellent introduction. We always recommend a consultation first to assess whether it is the most appropriate starting point for your specific skin.

How long before an event should I book SkinVive?

I usually suggest at least two weeks before a significant occasion, to allow any minor injection-site marks to fully settle and the hydration effect to be fully established. Four to six weeks is a more comfortable margin if the occasion is particularly important. Profhilo, requiring a two-session course, needs a minimum of eight to ten weeks from the start of treatment for the full effect to be visible.

Which one lasts longer?

Both treatments last approximately six to nine months in most patients, though individual results vary depending on skin type, lifestyle and how the body metabolises HA. SkinVive tends to be slightly more predictable in its duration because the crosslinked HA degrades more slowly than non-crosslinked HA. Profhilo’s results can also be extended by the fact that the bioremodelling it triggers produces genuine structural change in the skin, some of which persists even as the HA itself metabolises.

Ready to Find Out Which Is Right for Your Skin?

SkinVive and Profhilo are both treatments I am genuinely enthusiastic about and use regularly at Health & Aesthetics. The right choice for you depends on a proper look at your skin, a conversation about what you want to achieve and an honest assessment of which treatment or combination of treatments will get you there most effectively.

If you have been going back and forth between the two and cannot decide, that is not a problem. It is a conversation we can have properly at your consultation.
