Sofwave Advanced: The Non-Surgical Lift Explained

Posted on 30th September 2026 by Dr Rekha Tailor

As we age, the skin gradually loses the collagen and elastin that keep it firm. The result is familiar: a softer jawline, early jowls, a brow that sits a little lower and looser skin under the chin and on the neck. For a long time the only reliable way to lift these areas was surgery, and the non-surgical alternatives were either limited in effect or considerably more uncomfortable than patients were led to expect.

Sofwave is one of the more significant developments in this area. It isn’t a substitute for a facelift, and I’ll be clear below about what it can’t do, but for the right patient it offers a genuine, natural looking improvement with very little downtime.

Sofwave Advanced: The Non-Surgical Lift Explained

What Is Sofwave?

Sofwave is an ultrasound treatment that lifts and tightens the skin and softens lines and wrinkles, with no needles, no incisions and very little downtime. In the United States it is FDA cleared to improve facial lines and wrinkles, lift the eyebrow, and lift lax tissue under the chin and on the neck, which covers most of the areas my patients point at when they look in the mirror.

How Does It Actually Work?

Most of the firmness in your skin comes from collagen and elastin in the dermis, the middle layer of the skin. From our mid twenties we steadily make less of both, and by the time the jawline softens and the brows start to drop, that decline has been going on quietly for years.

Sofwave uses a technology called SUPERB, short for Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam. Several parallel beams of ultrasound energy are delivered to a precise depth of around 1.5mm, right in the mid dermis, creating small zones of controlled heat. Your body treats these as something to repair, and over the following weeks and months it lays down fresh collagen and elastin. The skin gradually becomes firmer, tighter and slightly lifted.

Two things set it apart from older ultrasound devices. It works at one consistent depth, which in my experience makes results more predictable. And the applicator has built in cooling that protects the skin’s surface, which is why it’s more comfortable than people expect and suitable for all skin types, including darker skin tones that are often cautious candidates for heat based treatments.

What Can It Treat?

  • Early jowling and a softening jawline
  • A heavy or lowered brow that makes the eyes look tired
  • Loose or crepey skin under the chin and on the neck
  • Fine lines around the eyes and mouth, now much easier to reach with the smaller Precise applicator

Who Is It Right For, And Who Isn’t?

This is the part I feel most strongly about, because a lot of disappointment with energy based devices comes from treating the wrong patient. Sofwave works best for mild to moderate laxity, usually in patients from their mid thirties to early sixties who want a natural improvement rather than a dramatic change. Those who start early often get the best value, because they’re maintaining collagen rather than trying to rebuild it from very little.

Where I’ll be honest, and occasionally unpopular, is with patients who have heavy jowls or a lot of loose neck skin. No device, Sofwave included, will give them the result of a facelift, and repeated device treatments won’t change that. For these patients, a referral to a good surgeon is the most honest advice I can give. Sofwave also doesn’t restore volume, so if hollowing or flattened cheeks are the main issue, tightening the skin over the top won’t fix it.

Sofwave Versus HIFU And Ultherapy

Ultherapy reaches deeper, down to the layer a surgeon works on, and some feel that gives more lift in heavier tissue. The trade off is comfort, as treatment at that depth is widely reported to be more painful. Sofwave focuses on the dermis, where collagen is made, and is far more tolerable. I’d also add a word of caution about cheap HIFU on the high street. Devices vary widely in quality, and in a non-medical setting there may be no proper assessment of whether you’re a suitable candidate at all. The name of the device matters far less than who is using it and whether they’ve selected you properly.

What Happens During Treatment?

Every treatment starts with a proper consultation to make sure Sofwave is the right tool for the job. The treatment itself usually takes 30 to 45 minutes for the full face and neck. Numbing cream is often applied first, then the applicator is moved across the skin delivering short pulses. Most patients describe a deep warmth or brief prickling heat, strongest over bony areas like the jawline and forehead. It’s tolerable for the vast majority, and I’ll adjust as we go if you need a moment.

Downtime And Results

Most patients leave slightly pink, which settles within an hour or two, and go straight back to work. Occasionally there’s mild swelling or tenderness for a day. Results build as new collagen forms, typically showing from around six weeks and improving for three months or more. Many people need only one session, and most maintain the result with a yearly top up. Treat it now, in the autumn, and you’ll see the full benefit by the new year.

Sofwave also pairs beautifully with other treatments. Skin boosters improve texture and hydration, a little carefully placed filler restores genuine volume loss, and anti wrinkle injections soften expression lines. Planned in the right order, the combination often looks better than any one treatment alone.

Is Sofwave Worth It?

For the right patient, yes, without hesitation. If your jawline is softening, your brows are sitting lower or your neck is losing its firmness, and you want a natural, gradual improvement without surgery, it’s one of the most elegant options available. If your laxity is more advanced, I’ll tell you honestly and point you towards what will genuinely help.

Do get in touch with the clinic to book a consultation, and we’ll look at your skin together and work out whether Sofwave is right for you.
