The Evolution of Laser Hair Removal

Posted on 20th January 2023 by Dr Rekha Tailor

Firstly, what is Laser Hair Removal? Laser hair removal offers a solution to unwanted, persistent hair growth and ingrown hairs.

Laser hair removal targets the bulb of the hair follicle to remove the hair and prevent regrowth; providing semi-permanent, long lasting results.

The most popular areas for laser hair removal typically include facial hair, bikini areas, under arms and legs.

Laser hair has been predominantly popular for women, however it’s popularity for male clientele is ever increasing. Although these days, hair removal can be a taboo subject for men. It was men that were the first to pioneer hair removal methods.

Hair removal can be dated back to the ancient Egyptians. The first razor can be dated back to 3000 BC. It is theorised that ancient Egyptian men removed all their body hair so it wouldn’t give something for their enemies to hold on to.

In the present day, hair removal is a preferred choice for not only practical reasons i.e. to avoid shaving rash and ingrown hairs but for aesthetic reasons too.

Hair removal for an aesthetically pleasing aspect can also be dated back to the ancient Egyptians. Egyptian women would use a beeswax, sugary substance to remove unwanted hair. They would remove all their body hair apart from their brows. They would even shape their pubic hair.

As technology has developed so has hair removal methods. The most successful treatment for long term results is laser hair removal. And although hair removal methods have changed, the hair growth cycle has not.

Facial hair, pubic hair and axillary hair is classed as terminal hair. Terminal hair is thick and coarse and is influenced by the production of the androgen hormone.

During puberty both sexes will experience development of terminal hair in the pubic and axillary areas. Men will also develop terminal hair growth on their backs, chest, arms and legs, nose, ears and face.

The density and coarseness of terminal hair can cause itching, irritation and ingrown hairs, especially when shaving or waxing. So, it is no wonder that laser hair removal is the No.1 go to for hair removal.

Laser hair removal works by the laser being attracted to the pigment (colour) of the hair. When the laser hits the pigment, it creates a heat reaction and in turn destroys the bulb. The bulb Is attached to the blood supply, overtime the blood supply weakens; slowing down the hair growth cycle and preventing further regrowth. The laser hair removal treatment causes no disruption to the epidermis leaving the skin, rash and irritation free. It is a great preventive for ingrown hairs, because, we are destroying the hair at its root and avoiding breakage of the follicle, it is less likely for a hair to curl back on itself and create an ingrown hair.
