younger-looking hands

Hands up if you’re worried your hands make you look older than you feel? Dreaming of younger-looking hands? (OK, you can put them away now!).

If, like many people, you’ve focussed mostly on your face for anti-ageing treatments, and your hands are letting you down; what if you could stop worrying about them and be proud to show off beautiful, soft rejuvenated hands instead?

Why do our hands particularly show our age?

As we age, the skin on our hands thins, just as it does elsewhere, and our hands become less plump, making the bones, veins and tendons stand out more. If your hands have suffered sun damage over the years, you might also notice brown spots appearing. These natural signs of ageing do take a little more than hand cream to tackle – but there are a number of treatments which will address the problem, and which are especially effective in combination.

What treatments can improve the appearance of ageing hands?

Here at Health & Aesthetics, there are three main treatments we recommend for ageing hands:

  • Fillers
  • Profhilo
  • Laser

Used alone or in combination (depending on the signs of ageing you need to address) these three treatments can quickly have you ready to throw away the gloves and get a manicure to celebrate.

Using fillers to restore volume in the hands

Carefully injected into the backs of the hands, fillers can restore volume and plumpness. This has the effect of reducing the visual appearance of bones, veins and tendons, making the hands look younger and fresher. At Health & Aesthetics, we use Radiesse fillers for hand treatments, which are FDA approved as both safe and effective. Radiesse is made from calcium hydroxylapatite (a mineral found in human teeth and bones) which is suspended in a water-based, gel-like solution. This stimulates collagen growth, filling and plumping the hands to give them a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance, and over time the calcium and gel are absorbed by the body. Filler treatments take 30-60 minutes (including anaesthetic numbing time) depending on the area to be treated, and there’s very little downtime afterwards. Results can last for up to 18 months, and the number of treatments will depend on your needs.

Using Profhilo to improve skin tone

Unlike fillers, the injectable treatment Profhilo doesn’t restore volume, but what it does do is hydrate the skin and boost collagen and elastin production, dramatically improving its quality and reducing the appearance of wrinkles and crepey skin.

Profhilo is a Bio remodeller, and because it interacts with your tissues and has a unique spreading ability which allows it to flow freely through the dermis and subcutaneous tissues (which fillers can’t), it stimulates regeneration over a wider area than where injected. This makes it ideal for treating hands.

Profhilo is a quick treatment, usually only 30 minutes, and there’s minimal downtime or recovery time. A treatment plan usually involves two initial treatments, with maintenance treatments every six months.

Combining fillers and Profhilo can make your hands look plumper and with a softer, rejuvenated skin tone.

(A word about injectables…injectables in the UK are severely under-regulated, meaning that almost anyone can offer you an injectable treatment, with minimal training. If you’re considering any injectable treatment, always check that the practitioner is a medically trained doctor, as only a doctor will have the anatomical knowledge to deliver these treatments safely, and with the results you’re looking for.) The other condition many people develop as they age is tell-tale brown spots on the backs of the hands.

Using Laser to reduce brown spots on the hands

Laser Pigmentation is a treatment specifically designed to target sun damage, brown spots, age spots, freckles, and other benign pigmentation issues. The Pigmentation treatment is a laser treatment performed with our industry-leading, FDA-approved Excel V+ Laser by Cutera.

The Excel V+ laser uses a high-power green laser in order to target blood vessels and pigment with abnormalities. The excel V+ laser treatment works through the targeted application of clinically proven laser wavelengths. We target these wavelengths to specific areas of skin concern and work to diminish uneven tone and stimulate rejuvenation.

Laser Skin Rejuvenation takes 30 minutes, and involves very little downtime – which can be reduced further by combining it with LED Light Therapy.
