Juvederm® is a type of dermal filler which is injected into areas of the face to restore lost volume and fill lines and wrinkles to give an instantly more youthful effect. Dermal fillers can deliver similar enhancements to surgery, but they are much less invasive. Juvederm® is commonly used as a lip-filler, plumping and enhancing the lip area, but is also used on other areas of the face which change as we age, particularly around the eyes, and on the cheeks.
Dermal fillers differ from anti-wrinkle injectables like Botox in that they literally fill in wrinkles or areas of lost volume, rather than acting as a muscle relaxant. Juvederm® uses Hyaluronic Acid (HA) a sugar which is a naturally occurring ingredient in the skin. As skin ages, less HA is produced, which causes skin to dry out and lose volume and elasticity, so replacing the HA in strategic areas of the face restores this lost fullness, and smooths out lines and wrinkles. Best of all, the effects are visible immediately, and this minimally invasive treatment costs far less than surgery, without the downtime.
Juvederm® enhancement for cheeks, eyes and lips
As we age, we lose fullness in our cheeks, often resulting in a sunken look, and a heavier appearance around the jawline. By adding volume to the midface area, Juvederm® instantly lifts the cheeks and lower face. As the fine skin around the eyes loses moisture, wrinkles form, and the natural reduction of the underlying bone and muscle deepens the hollows around the eyes. As well as filling lines, Juvederm® can reduce this hollowed, tired appearance and improve definition around the eyes.
Even our lips change in shape and lose volume as we get older – lips appear thinner and lose their plumpness, and wrinkles form around the mouth. Juvederm® smooths these wrinkles, and can also make lips look fuller and more prominent.
How long does Juvederm® last, and are there any side effects?
Since the active ingredient HA is a naturally occurring substance in the skin it is gradually metabolised and absorbed into the body, so Juvederm® is not a permanent filler, and the natural-looking results that it delivers are clinically proven to last up to 18 months. These results are visible immediately after your treatment, which typically takes just 30 minutes, with minimal downtime. Again, as it is a natural product, side effects are extremely rare, and a thorough consultation before treatment is designed to ensure you are suitable.
What is the difference between Juvederm® and Restylane?
Both Juvederm® and Restylane are HA fillers, but, here at Health & Aesthetics, we prefer to use the latest generation of Juvederm® fillers: Juvederm Voluma, Juvederm Volift and Juvederm Volbella. These generally use a higher concentration of the active ingredient than other products on the market, and our highly experienced doctor, Dr Tailor, finds that they give the most effective, natural-looking and long lasting results.
