6 Common Myths of Injectables
Posted on 1st August 2017
Injectables are a popular procedure used to improve the skin. Like many topics, there are various myths circulating regarding injectable procedures, and we thought it was time to set the record straight. Here, we have listed a few common myths in relation to fillers and injectables.
What Are Injectables?
Injectables are procedures conducted using a needle or syringe. There are numerous different types of injectable procedures, many of which we conduct here at health + aesthetics. These include eight Point Facelift, Botox, Dermal Fillers, MD Codes, Profhilo, Tear Troughs, and Teeth Grinding.
Injectable Myths #1 – Botox and Fillers Work the Same Way
These two procedures work completely differently. Botox is a neuromodulator that specifically targets the muscle and inhibits movement. This is why it is mainly used in the forehead, between the eyes and the crow’s feet that surround the eyes where we have lines from constant facial expression. The effect usually lasts about 3 months.
Fillers are used to augment or ‘fill’ tissues that have lost volume. It can be used in many areas of the face including the temples, cheeks, lips and around the mouth. The effects for fillers last around 9-12 months, though some can last up to 18 months.
Injectable Myths #2: Botox is Addictive
Cosmetic injections are not physiologically addictive, and there is no scientific evidence that indicates injectables are addictive. Treatments should always be done in moderation, and aim at getting a natural and long lasting result. Usually, people get more than one injectable because they liked the results of the treatment and want to improve that area of their face after the effects are gone.
Myth #3: Cosmetic Fillers Are Very Painful
Although we all have different pain thresholds, cosmetic fillers are not as painful as you might think. When you think of injections, it is easy to think they will be highly painful. In reality, the sensation is a slight pinching feeling which only lasts for a few seconds.
Many of our patients come in for our dermal fillers treatment, in which we provide local anaesthetic cream twenty minutes before treatment, ensuring our clients are as comfortable and relaxed as possible. Before Botox treatments, we use a cooling applicator to ease the minor pain the small needle might cause.
Myth #4: The Results Are Permanent
Some fillers can last up to a year, although Botox only lasts three months. Repeated injections are necessary to maintain results. Botox treatments temporarily relax the muscle, and wrinkle relaxing injections such as Botox are also an excellent treatment for bruxism, the term referred to teeth grinding.
Myth #5: Botox and Filler Treatments Are Just for Women
This is a highly inaccurate myth, as these types of treatments are for both men and women, and are popular among both sexes. Although cosmetic injectables are more commonly requested by women, there has been a significant increase amongst men.
Botox procedures are the most effective non-surgical treatment for smoothing out dynamic wrinkles, which occur in common areas such as the brow, forehead, and at the corners of the eyes. As this can occur in both men and women, both sexes use these procedures.
Myth #6: Botox is Only Effective for Facial Lines
There is much more to Botox than simply being used to treat facial lines. Botox was actually developed as a treatment for neurological disorders, and continues to be used for a variety of different conditions. Botox can be used for depression, migraines, chronic neck and back pain, involuntary facial movements, and neck tremors.
