Combatting tech neck in the digital age

Posted on 26th March 2024 by Hannah Betts

Typically, neck and shoulder pain have been associated with growing older. But in today’s rapidly advancing digital world, where screens often dominate our lives, a new age ailment has emerged – “tech neck”.

Tech neck refers to neck or shoulder pain, stiffness, and skin wrinkling resulting from poor posture during the prolonged use of smartphones, tablets, and other digital devices. It can impact people both old and young.

This blog delves into the phenomenon of tech neck and potential treatment options to solve the cosmetic concerns associated with the conditions.

What exactly is tech neck?

Tech neck is characterised by chronic neck or shoulder pain resulting from the excessive use of technology where the head is tilted forward for long periods of time. It manifests in two primary forms: physical strain and dermatological concerns.

Physically, it encompasses neck and shoulder pain, stiffness, and soreness, which can also lead to other problems such as headaches and muscle spasms. The human head can weigh up to 12 pounds, so looking down for a long period of time can put a lot of strain on the neck muscles and cause some real troubles in this area.

However, we are starting to see that the symptoms extend beyond physical concerns.

Dermatologically, tech neck can be associated with premature ageing such as horizontal lines and wrinkles across the neck. Research suggests that the increased strain, poor posture, and constant folding of the neck skin when looking down at devices can accelerate ageing of the neck skin and cause permanent creases over time.

Treatments for tech neck

The rise of tech neck is a testament to the impact of technology and the digital world on overall health and image. Fortunately, a wide range of non-surgical treatment options exist which may be able to mitigate the cosmetic effects of tech neck.

Polynucleotide treatments

Polynucleotides are chains of nucleotides, which are essentially the building blocks of DNA. These molecules play a crucial role in regenerative skincare due to their ability to stimulate the body’s natural healing and cell renewal processes.

When injected into the skin, polynucleotides trigger a series of biological responses that promote the repair and rejuvenation of skin cells. This means the cells work more effectively, enhancing the production of collagen and elastin, and improving the extracellular matrix of the skin – which helps boost hydration. What’s more, polynucleotides also have anti-inflammatory properties, helping to reduce inflammation and pigmentation.

These properties lead to healthier, more youthful-looking skin with improved texture and elasticity. This makes polynucleotides an effective option for treating a variety of skin concerns, including the lines, wrinkles, and skin creasing associated with tech neck. Also, as polynucleotides support skin cell regeneration, results continue to improve for months after treatment as healthier cells continue to be produced.

Secret RF

Secret RF is a minimally invasive treatment that combines microneedling with radio frequency (RF) energy to rejuvenate the skin. During the procedure, precisely controlled RF energy is delivered through tiny needles, penetrating into the skin at various depths. This process creates controlled micro-damage, which stimulates the body’s healing response, leading to the enhanced production of elastin and collagen.

The RF energy also encourages further skin restructuring and rejuvenation, leading to improved skin texture, tone, and firmness effectively addressing concerns like wrinkles, fine lines, and overall skin laxity. This makes Secret RF a great solution for the cosmetic concerns associated with tech neck, resulting in a smoother complexion, all with minimal downtime.

Alma Hybrid

Alma-Hybrid laser treatment is an ultimate skin resurfacing treatment with the power to go far beyond traditional laser procedures. Combining two powerful and complimenting lasers – a CO2 laser and a non-ablative 1570nm laser – Alma Hybrid helps to resurface and rejuvenate aged or damaged skin. This advanced treatment helps to even skin tone and texture, as well as diminish lines, wrinkles, and creases, including those associated with tech neck.

JULÄINE™ of Sweden

To address the horizontal lines and skin laxity associated with tech neck, JULÄINE encourages the skin to rebuild its natural collagen. The treatment helps to smooth and firm the neck area over time, resulting in a more lifted and defined appearance. It is a gentle yet effective option for long-term results.

Seek professional support

It goes without saying that if you are experiencing physical pain as a result of tech neck, it’s a good idea to check in with a medical professional, such as your doctor or a physiotherapist. They will be able to assess your situation, advise on any lifestyle modifications, and support you with getting the right treatments for your unique needs.

At Health & Aesthetics, we also undertake a full medical consultation with each individual. So, if you are showing signs of needing further support for the physical side of tech neck, we will be able to point you in the right direction.
