Polynucleotides vs Profhilo

Posted on 14th February 2024 by Hannah Betts

It’s no secret that the world of dermatology is absolutely booming with innovative treatments for those in pursuit of healthier and more youthful skin. Amongst the myriad of options, treatments such as polynucleotides and Profhilo have emerged as frontrunners, offering distinct benefits for skin rejuvenation.

Both treatments have gathered significant attention for their efficacy and unique approaches to enhancing skin health. But which one should you be choosing and why?

In this blog, we’ll delve into what polynucleotides and Profhilo are, their applications, and how to choose the best treatment for your skin needs.

Understanding polynucleotide treatments

Nucleotides are the building blocks that make up DNA, and DNA controls many important bodily functions, including how the skin develops. Polynucleotides are chains of these nucleotides.

When polynucleotides are introduced to the skin, they support cells in the skin to repair meaning they can function better. For example, the skin cells are encouraged to stimulate the development of essential skin proteins such as collagen and elastin, which provide the skin with shape, smoothness, and volume.

What’s more, polynucleotide chains can also improve the extracellular matrix of the skin cells to boost hydration. Polynucleotide treatments also have an anti-free radical action property, meaning they can counteract damage caused from factors such as the sun, stress, and pollution.

As polynucleotides encourage the body’s natural mechanisms to develop healthier skin cells, this type of treatment is seen as ‘regenerative’.

Applications of polynucleotide treatments

Polynucleotides are incredibly versatile. By improving overall skin functioning, polynucleotides help to boost elasticity, hydrate the skin, and reduce inflammation. These features can greatly benefit skin concerns such as:

  • wrinkles, lines and sunken skin as a result of lost collagen and elastin in the ageing process
  • rosacea and hyperpigmentation
  • dry, dehydrated skin
  • dark circles
  • acne scarring
  • inflammation.

Understanding Profhilo

Profhilo is a hyaluronic acid treatment which aims to improve overall skin health and improve skin laxity. Hyaluronic acid plays an essential role in keeping the skin hydrated, firm, and bright.

Throughout life, hyaluronic acid production in the skin tends to slow down. Profhilo works by introducing more hyaluronic acid into the skin, which helps to hydrate the skin and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. This results in improved skin tone, texture, and elasticity, offering a subtle and natural enhancement.

Profhilo is also unique in how it interacts with skin tissues. Profhilo can flow freely through tissues in ways that traditional fillers cannot, meaning it can help to improve areas that are usually difficult to treat.

So, what can Profhilo treat?

Profhilo is an excellent option for those looking to improve their skin texture and signs of ageing. By helping to stimulate collagen and elastin in the skin, Profhilo works to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, and enhance volume in the skin.

Polynucleotides vs Profhilo: is there a difference?

There’s no denying that polynucleotide treatments and Profhilo share some overlapping qualities, but there are some key differences that can impact which treatment is right for your individual needs.

Profhilo works by adding moisture to the skin and deeply hydrating the skin to make it appear smoother and brighter, which in turn, can help offer visible anti-ageing results. However, polynucleotide treatments work by altering the DNA of the skin cells and encouraging the skin’s natural mechanisms to develop healthier cells. This means that polynucleotide treatments tend to rejuvenate the skin at a deeper level and focus on improving overall skin health.

What’s more, polynucleotide treatments and Profhilo differ in how long they last, how quickly they show results, and how much maintenance is required.

  • As polynucleotides work at a deeper level, it can take longer to see results (up to 3 months). However, after this, results can last for and continue improving for around 6 months after treatment. Most people then go on to have a single maintenance treatment every 3-4 months to sustain long-term results.
  • Profhilo shows results quicker and requires 2 initial treatments. This is followed by maintenance treatments every 3-4 months as results don’t last as long as polynucleotides.

These properties meant that Profhilo and polynucleotides are often suited to specific candidates. For instance, polynucleotides are a great option for those with mature skin who want to regenerate skin cells at a deeper level and experience long-lasting results. Alternatively, Profhilo works well for younger individuals who want to get ahead of the ageing process or who are showing the very first signs of ageing.

There are also a range of other individual factors that need to be considered before determining which treatment might be most suitable.

So, polynucleotides vs Profhilo: what’s the answer?
