How to get rid of jowls

Posted on 23rd May 2024 by Hannah Betts

The development of jowls, the sagging skin that appears below the jawline, is a natural part of the ageing process. Yet, it’s a change that many people wish to address. These changes in facial contour can significantly impact how we see ourselves and sometimes how others perceive us.

Fortunately, advancements in aesthetic medicine offer effective solutions for those looking to restore a firmer, more youthful jawline.

What are jowls?

The word ‘jowls’ refers to the loose skin below the jawline around the neck and chin. Jowls impact most people as they age.

What causes jowls?

Jowls usually develop due to a combination of factors that affect the structure and quality of our skin.

For instance, when we age, our skin diminishes in essential proteins like collagen and elastin, which are responsible for keeping our skin firm and plump. This reduction causes the skin to become less tight and more prone to sagging.

As we age, our bones also shrink and we can lose fat pads in this upper face. This results in excess skin which sags down, causing jowls to form.

Other factors can influence the likelihood or severity of jowls. Our genetics play a big role in our facial structure and skin type, which can make jowls more likely or prominent. Lifestyle choices such as excessive sun exposure, poor diet, and smoking can also accelerate skin ageing. If you’ve had a significant weight change, your skin may also become stretched, which might make it more likely to sag, including around the jawline.

Can you prevent jowls?

Although you may not like the appearance, jowls are a really normal and natural sign of ageing. While there is nothing you can do to absolutely prevent jowls, there are a few things you can do which might reduce their severity. For instance:

  • wear sunscreen daily and limit your sun exposure
  • maintain a healthy lifestyle such as a balanced diet and avoid smoking
  • develop a medical-grade skincare routine, for example, using our ZO Skin Health range

How to get rid of jowls

For those looking to address already formed jowls, our clinic offers several cutting-edge non-surgical treatments that can restore a more youthful jawline and improve skin quality:

Sofwave

When collagen and elastin diminish as we age, our skin loses its elasticity and firmness, eventually leading to wrinkles, sagging skin, and often jowls.

Sofwave is an FDA-approved and clinically proven treatment that remodels collagen to improve the overall appearance of the skin. Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam SUPERB™ technology is transmitted through the skin’s surface to heat the mid-dermis. This process rejuvenates the collagen fibres, helping to refresh the skin and reduce the appearance of saggy skin in the jowl area.

EndoLift

EndoLift is an industry-leading laser treatment that aims to tighten loose skin and diminish pockets of excess fat, including the jowls.

A tiny micro-optical fibre is inserted beneath the skin tissues to form a pathway to transmit laser energy. Powerful laser energy then travels to the deepest skin tissues to encourage the production of collagen fibres. Over time, this process tightens loose skin, promoting the chin and jaw area to appear more contoured.

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are a popular treatment for getting rid of jowls. Fillers made from hyaluronic acid are injected into targeted regions to restore volume and lift the skin. This helps to lift the face and reduce the look of sagging skin and jowls.

As well as helping the skin appear more plump and youthful, fillers can also be strategically placed to contour the face and define facial features such as the jawline. Our team at Health & Aesthetics have extensive experience in injecting dermal fillers and are highly skilled at creating natural-looking results which sculpt your face in the desired way.

Polynucleotides

Polynucleotides are an innovative regenerative skin treatment. They work to regenerate the skin cells so they function more effectively. For example, polynucleotides help to encourage the increased production of collagen and elastin, and can also reduce inflammation and boost hydration. Collectively, these properties help to improve the overall appearance and health of the skin. What’s more, as polynucleotides stimulate the body’s natural mechanisms to work more effectively, results continue to improve long after treatment, as healthy skin cells continue to naturally regenerate.

When polynucleotides are combined with other treatments for jowls like fillers, Sofwave, or EndoLift, they can help to improve and sustain overall results.

Profhilo® Structura

Profhilo® Structura helps to reduce jowls by repositioning and regenerating fat pads in the mid and lower face, creating a more contoured and lifted jawline.
